This topic is always controversial.

Tea Tree Essential Oil is one of the most adulterated oils on the market. In any other brand than Young Living, I wouldn't use it. Remember, I believe your choice of brand quality matters. So does the method and duration of use.

If you are using Tea Tree Essential Oils -- it needs to be Melaleuca alternifolia, and you need to be sure there is nothing more in the bottle of essential oil. If you cannot validate that — leave it on the shelf. If it’s in a shampoo or other product as an ingredient — can you validate the origin of the oil?

Tea Tree Essential Oil is high in terpenes and is primarily antiseptic and cleansing.

I personally do not consider tea tree oil to be used every day nor to diffuse just to smell good. Many people will include it in their homemade cleaning products without issue. With our dogs, I am not going to use it without purpose for something specific in an unwell or injured dog.

Suggesting the use of Tea Tree Essential Oil for a dog often leads to questions and people who share the fears they have been taught about Tea Tree. I have heard all of these “stories” and done extensive research on this subject. Research shows that there were many other factors at play not often disclosed in the fear posts that continue to surface. More importantly — inappropriate use of adulterated essential oils, for extended continuous durations, and in some cases with other chemicals at play.

Sure we have guidance around the safety of all essential oils. And with many individuals, situations & methods inclusion of Tea Tree and the amount — depends. We need to look at dilution, the overall amount used, frequency of application, method of application, the blend we may be making, duration of use, etc. But the amount of pure unadulterated tea tree it would take to cause harm significantly exceeds reasonable use.

There's no way to put the "it depends" on a graphic. But there are extremists and companies who cannot stand by their quality of education.

But for a dog with sinus issues, dental problems, fungi-related issues, or skin problems -- there is indeed a place for it. I’ve used it countless times with no issues. As have many veterinarians and holistic pet professionals that I know personally and professionally.

Common Fears of Tea Tree Essential Oils With Dogs:

Some will suggest it may contribute to thinning blood, but that doesn't mean that is not safe to use with our dog. It just means we need to know what we're doing with it, why, how long, etc. It's not something to be scared of.

Neither is Wintergreen. It has its place in the animal world when needed. Examples: heat, discomfort, swelling, circulatory support, first aid, and muscle discomfort.

We must think of essential oils for their purpose -- not their fragrance and use them wisely. Always do your research and make decisions for yourself, your family, and your dog.
