5 Element Theory: Season of Fire For Dogs
Fire Element & the Season of Fire
June 21 - Sept 9
Summer brings sunshine, longer days, and more outdoor adventures with your pup—but in Traditional Chinese Veterinary Medicine (TCVM), it also brings the season of Fire. If your dog thrives on attention, loves to be the center of the action, or struggles with anxiety, this post is for you.
The Fire Element is all about connection, joy, and warmth… but too much fire can burn out the system. Let’s explore how you can use seasonal nutrition, essential oils, and lifestyle changes to keep your dog happy and balanced this summer.
Is Your Dog a Fire Dog?
Fire dogs are the life of the party. They:
Crave attention and affection
Are highly social and expressive
Love playtime and human connection
May be vocal (think barking, whining, or “talking”)
Often become hyperexcitable or anxious when overstimulated
Sound familiar?
Common Health Concerns for Fire Dogs
When Fire is in excess or out of balance, you might notice:
Heart imbalances (palpitations, arrhythmias, murmurs)
Restlessness, anxiety, or panic attacks
Overheating and excessive panting
Tongue ulcers or red, inflamed gums
Sleep disruptions, especially between 11pm–1am (Heart time in TCVM)
Behavioral clinginess or separation anxiety
Sudden emotional outbursts or stress-based diarrhea
The Fire Element corresponds with the Heart and Small Intestine, so emotional, cardiovascular, and digestive symptoms often go hand-in-hand in the summer.
Cool Down the Fire: Food as Medicine in Summer
Summer is the hottest season—and Fire dogs run warm all year round. So this is the time to support your pup with cooling, hydrating, and heart-friendly foods.
Here’s what to include:
Cooling proteins like duck, rabbit, whitefish, or turkey
Moisture-rich veggies like cucumbers, zucchini, celery, and watermelon
Bitter greens like dandelion, endive, and arugula (they cool and support the heart)
Calming herbs like chamomile, hawthorn, and lemon balm (ask me how to safely dose)
💧Don’t forget hydration. Bone broth (served cool), coconut water, or frozen herbal cubes can help your dog stay cool and nourished.
Essential Oils to Soothe the Fire Element
Fire dogs are emotionally sensitive and easily overwhelmed. Essential oils can help calm the heart, balance emotions, and promote sleep.
My favorites for Fire season:
Emotional calm: Roman chamomile, lavender, ylang ylang, neroli
Heart support: Rose, myrrh, frankincense, cistus
Cooling & grounding: Vetiver, sandalwood, geranium
Diffuse, apply to bedding, or dilute and apply topically to calming points like the ears or chest. Want guidance? I’ve got you.
Lifestyle Tips for Summer Wellness
Fire dogs need connection, but too much activity or heat can overwhelm their system. Here’s how to balance things out:
Prioritize early morning or evening walks
Avoid overstimulation in noisy, crowded places
Use food puzzles and calming routines to settle their mind
Create quiet, shaded spaces for rest
Try acupuncture or acupressure points like Heart 7 for anxiety
