ssential Oils for Senior Dogs: Safe and Effective Use

As a holistic pet health coach, I use essential oils regularly for my senior dogs, including my mini-dachshunds. These natural oils are a wonderful addition to their wellness routine, supporting their health, vitality, and comfort as they age.

Daily Use of Essential Oils for Senior Dogs

My dogs have their own collection of essential oils, and we incorporate a variety of them into their daily care. Essential oils like Copaiba and DiGize are used as needed for their soothing properties and digestive support. Frankincense, known for its powerful anti-inflammatory and immune-boosting benefits, is used several times a week to promote overall health and well-being, especially for aging dogs.

I also rotate uplifting oils such as Orange, Grapefruit, and Lime throughout the week. These citrus oils are safe for ingestion when used in proper amounts and diluted appropriately for your dog’s size. They can offer antioxidant benefits, support mood, and add a fresh burst of energy to their day.

Incorporating Essential Oils into Your Senior Dog’s Diet

For safe ingestion, always dilute essential oils. I don’t worry too much about adding a carrier oil to my dogs’ raw food, as their diet already includes healthy fats. However, you can always add a bit of coconut oil or grass-fed butter when mixing essential oils into your dog’s food. This helps ensure proper absorption and enhances the benefits of the oils. Make sure to monitor your dog closely and adjust as needed based on their response.

Topical and Diffusion Applications for Senior Dogs

In addition to ingestion, I use essential oils topically and through diffusion. While my senior mini-dachshunds have become accustomed to essential oils and tolerate them well with minimal dilution, I recommend starting slow, especially for older dogs who may have more sensitive systems.

  • Topical application: Dilute the essential oil with a carrier oil (such as fractionated coconut oil) and apply it to specific areas like the spine, paws, or belly to promote relaxation or soothe sore muscles.

  • Diffusion: Using a cold air diffuser is a gentle way to introduce essential oils into your senior dog’s environment. Essential oils like Lavender and Frankincense can help create a calming atmosphere, which is especially beneficial for senior dogs with anxiety or cognitive decline.
