Photosensitivity And Essential Oils
Photosensitivity (sun sensitivity) is a condition that causes heightened sensitivity to light, resulting in skin irritation or even an allergic reaction when exposed to light sources, especially ultraviolet (UV) light. Essential oils can cause photosensitivity due to the presence of phototoxic compounds that increase the skin's sensitivity to light. When applied topically, these compounds can cause skin damage or pigmentation when exposed to UV light from the sun or artificial sources.
Citrus oils contain different levels of coumarins and furanocoumarins. These molecules intensify the effects of the sun’s UV rays on the skin. This may cause the skin to tan or even burn, as in a sunburn.
Citrus Oils & The Skin
Citrus essential oils have many benefits for health and well-being, so we do not want you to be afraid to use them properly. But there are some things to know.
Common phototoxic essential oils are from the citrus family. They include lemon, lime, bergamot, angelica, dill, and grapefruit. It is important to be aware when using these essential oils topically to avoid sun exposure and use sun protection. In severe cases, the skin may become red, sunburn, blister or even darken, leading to permanent pigmentation changes.
Cirrus Oils like Orange and Tangerine contain fewer coumarins, so the reaction will be far less, but still take appropriate precautions.

Safe Use Of Citrus Oils
If you have an outdoorsy dog, it’s best to avoid using these photosensitive oils within 12 hours of sun exposure. Or you can apply the oils where the sun doesn’t shine, use a dog-friendly sunscreen, or cover your dog with dog-friendly clothing.
Apply your citrus essential oils with a carrier oil to dilute the concentration and reduce the risk of skin irritation.
If you and your dog are new to using citrus oils, go low and slow to start & apply only in one small area as you would for a patch test to see how the skin will respond.
