Is A Raw Dog Food Diet Safe

The short answer is yes! A raw dog food diet is very safe! Your dog is actually built to eat raw food.

The long answer is some dogs actually don't do well on a raw dog food diet, and some dogs seem to prefer light cook. No matter how you prepare it — even if you make a crockpot meal — real food, in a balanced recipe is healthier for your dog than kibble (dry dog food).

Digestively, speaking their systems are a bit different than ours and they are typically very well equipped to take on the "bacteria' that raw foods introduce to gut health. In fact, this challenge to gut health is actually good for them set them up with a good balanced, nutrient-rich diet.

I will say that some dogs require different transition processes for making the shift to raw. And if we have a dog with an underlying health issue, we need to manage the transition slowly and potentially include some supportive supplements like digestive enzymes and probiotics, at least temporarily.

Dogs that have been fed kibble for long periods of time, may no longer naturally produce the digestive enzymes needed to fully digest whole foods -- not just raw. This is always why when we shift even to a home-cooked menu we need to add digestive enzymes and probiotics to support the gut. Ideally, once we have the transition complete and foods in proper variety -- gut health improved & nutrition does it magic.

With foods from Volhard, we typically don't need long-term supplementation in these areas because the base mix is so nutrient-rich, complete, and balanced when proteins are added. For the aging or pet with a health concern we have to evaluate it case by case and this is where having a consultant in your corner makes a big difference.
