Homeopathic Dilutions
The drug strength appears after the name with a numeral followed by an X or C. Since X is the Roman numeral for 10, a 6X potency states that the drug has been diluted at a ratio of 1 to 10 and succussed for a total of six times.
6x potency refers to the decimal scale of dilution. In the decimal scale, a remedy is diluted to one part of the original substance in ten parts of diluent, such as water or alcohol.
A 6x potency means that the original substance has been diluted to one part in 10, six times over. For example, if you start with 1ml of the original substance and add 9ml of diluent, then you get a 1x dilution. For a 2x dilution you will take 1ml of the first dilution and add 9ml of diluent again and so on, till you reach 6x dilution.
In C terms, the concentration ratio is 1 to 100
"C" in homeopathy refers to the centesimal scale of dilution, which is used to indicate the degree of dilution of a remedy. A 6C dilution means that the original substance has been diluted to one part in 100, six times over. This means that for every 1 part of the original substance, 99 parts of diluent (typically water or alcohol) are added and the mixture is vigorously shaken. This process is then repeated six times.
A 200C dilution means that the original substance has been diluted to one part in 100, two hundred times over. Therefore, a 200C dilution is much more dilute than a 6C dilution.
M in homeopathy refers to the decimal scale of dilution, which is used to indicate the degree of dilution of a remedy. A 1M dilution means that the original substance has been diluted to one part in 1,000, one time over. This means that for every 1 part of the original substance, 999 parts of diluent (typically water or alcohol) are added and the mixture is vigorously shaken.
