Self-Selection - Let Your Dog Choose
How Your Dog Knows What Oils They Need
Dogs have an incredible ability to self-select natural remedies that support their well-being—a process known as zoopharmacognosy. This term refers to an animal’s innate ability to seek out medicinal plants, essential oils, and other natural substances to maintain health or address specific issues.
As a holistic pet health coach, I’ve witnessed firsthand how dogs intuitively choose the oils that benefit them most. It’s both fascinating and rewarding to watch them guide their own wellness journey.
How Does Zoopharmacognosy Work?
Animals in the wild naturally seek out plants, minerals, and even clay to help heal their bodies. Domesticated dogs still have this ability, and when given the opportunity, they will show clear preferences for certain essential oils, herbs, or supplements based on their current needs.
The key is to offer multiple safe options and observe your dog’s response. When presented with various essential oils, dogs will:
Sniff and linger around the oil they need.
Lick or nuzzle your hand when they want more.
Turn away or ignore the oils they don’t need.
This isn’t random—it’s an intuitive, biological response.
Choosing the Right Essential Oils for Your Dog
To truly explore zoopharmacognosy, you’ll need more than one or two oils in your collection. The process becomes more insightful when your dog has multiple choices.
When selecting oils, start with a few that match the issue you’re addressing. Here are some common concerns and the oils dogs often select:
Common Issues & Essential Oil Preferences
Separation Anxiety – Cedarwood, Lavender, Frankincense
Digestive Upset – Ginger, Peppermint, Fennel
Respiratory Support – Eucalyptus, Cypress, Ravintsara
Joint & Muscle Discomfort – Helichrysum, Copaiba, Wintergreen
Emotional Trauma – Rose, Neroli, Sandalwood
Immune Support – Oregano, Tea Tree (Melaleuca alternifolia), Lemon
Personal Experience: I’ve worked with multiple dogs suffering from separation anxiety, and time and time again, they gravitate toward Cedarwood. Some dogs will even lick it off my hands! I also cheat often and put Valor on my shoes or pants leg when going to visit stressed and fearful dogs.
How to Offer Oils to Your Dog
When practicing zoopharmacognosy, never force oils on your dog. Instead, follow these steps to let them choose naturally:
Select a few essential oils relevant to their needs.
Open the bottles one at a time and let your dog sniff.
Observe their reaction – are they interested or avoiding it?
Offer a drop on your hand or the cap (ensuring they can’t grab the cap and run).
Respect their choice – if they show interest, you can diffuse the oil or apply it diluted (as needed).
A Powerful Example: The Dog Who Chose Cypress
Several years ago, at an animal wellness conference, I had the privilege of witnessing the power of zoopharmacognosy in action. My roommate’s dog was critically ill, and several aromatherapy experts gathered to support him. His mom had already incorporated supplements, Raindrop therapy, and other holistic treatments into his care.
One evening, I sat with him, offering different oils. Without hesitation, he chose Cypress—licking it off my hands over and over. His mom encouraged me to continue letting him take as much as he wanted. He knew exactly what his body needed, and it was an unforgettable moment that reinforced my belief in this natural healing process.
I looked up the benefits of Cypress -- and cried my eyes out. Cypress is from the greek word "sempervivens" -- which means Live Forever.
Building Your Essential Oil Collection
If you’re just starting out, I recommend building a small but effective essential oil collection. Quality matters, so always choose therapeutic-grade oils from trusted sources. I personally prefer Young Living for purity and effectiveness.
For an easy start, consider these five multi-purpose oils:
Lavender – Calming, skin support, sleep aid
Frankincense – Immune booster, emotional balance
Peppermint – Digestive support, cooling effect
Cedarwood – Anxiety relief, relaxation
Copaiba – Inflammation support, pain relief
